College and university budgets for 2020/2021 are challenged as traditional revenue streams are negatively impacted and the ramifications from the global COVID-19 pandemic remain unclear.

Based on discussions with higher education leaders, we understand non-traditional options for revenue generation may become a reality for many institutions. Conducting an assessment of real estate assets, determining their importance to the institution’s mission and the evaluating ownership of certain assets can lead to revenue generating opportunities. For those assets that a higher education institution may consider for divestment, substantial capital is currently on the sidelines, waiting to be deployed by investors. At the same time, campus facility teams are charged with the safe reopening of a variety of asset types as campuses follow various paths to reopen.
