Space Management & Occupancy: From Reactive to Predictive Planning

4/4/2024

If you want to maximize every inch of your real estate, don’t miss the latest episode of the Team Around the Table podcast. Join Kay Barrett, Global Head of Space Management, Planning, and Occupancy, and Laura Bailey, Global Director of Spatial Analytics, as they delve into Space Management Planning & Occupancy (SPO)—where design and data combine to transform the way businesses utilize their workspaces.

Space Management & Occupancy: Five Lessons Learned

  1. Establish robust data governance. Data governance is the core foundation for strong analytics—and for less reactive, more predictive space planning. Implementing governance frameworks simplifies data complexities, fosters new ways to understand it, and instills trust and confidence in the insights derived.

  2. Understand user behavior. At the crux of effective space management is understanding why people use certain office spaces. The primary motive for most post-pandemic office use wasn’t solely collaboration, but rather a blend of socialization and focused work. Understanding these types of nuances is crucial for designing spaces that cater to the evolving needs of employees.

  3. Integrate external factors. Predictive analytics extend beyond internal factors to encompass external influences, such as weather patterns and traffic conditions. Incorporating these types of variables enables businesses to anticipate office attendance patterns more accurately and foster a deeper understanding of the relationship between external factors and employee behavior.

  4. Customize and collaborate. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to space management. Every client’s unique culture, needs and objectives require tailored strategies that are built on a foundation of transparency, shared goals, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

  5. Embrace change and co-creation. With a willingness to embrace change and innovation, and by fostering collaborative partnerships that facilitate co-creation, businesses can navigate the complexities of modern workspace management with confidence and agility.
