Overview of sustainability protocols for tourism

Leonardo Gaggia • 10/12/2024
Tourism contributes to 13% of Italy’s GDP, and is a key element of the nation’s economy.

However, overtourism can cause several issues, such as gentrification and the exploitation of labour, as well as contributing to the rise in global
greenhouse gas emissions. The decisions of today’s customer base are very much influenced by environmental concerns, and not only those, it is therefore necessary for the sector to tackle sustainability as a theme.

Most of the structures devoted to tourism in Italy are obsolete, it is therefore of key importance for the sector’s development that they modernize, not only to meet the customers’ needs but also to adhere to ESG and Agenda 2030 principles. Every action undertaken has to be aimed at obtaining certifications useful not only for economic development, but also for ethical development.
