Tasmania's ice sports community awaits a new beginning

13/12/2024
The Tasmanian Government is taking a major step toward reigniting the state’s love affair with ice sports, inviting Pre-Registrations of Interest (RoI) to develop and operate a new ice rink facility in Greater Hobart.

This initiative seeks interest from the market to fill a significant gap left by the closure of Tasmania’s only ice-skating rink in Glenorchy in May 2022, which left figure skaters, ice hockey players, and recreational skaters without a home.

The numbers speak to a projected strong and growing demand. Prior to the Glenorchy rink’s closure, 450 active members participated in ice sports, ranging from competitive figure skating to exhilarating ice hockey matches.

A 2022 market testing survey revealed that an ice sports facility in Tasmania could attract up to 125,000 annual visits. The AusPlay participation survey further projects a 20% increase in ice sports participation by 2032.

An overwhelming 80% of respondents in the market testing supported the development of a new ice rink, with many emphasising its potential to enrich the local community. This enthusiasm is not only about recreation — it’s about creating a space that brings people together for sporting events, training sessions, and even social gatherings.

In June 2024, the Tasmanian Ice Rink Feasibility Study, led by the Department of State Growth explored the operational and design needs of the facility, while also emphasising the social and economic benefits a new rink could bring to Tasmania.

Anna Holliday, President of Ice Sports Tasmania Inc, said the development of a new ice rink in Greater Hobart is a significant opportunity to bring back a vital community asset.

“Tasmania’s ice sports community, alongside local families and recreational skaters, will benefit from facility that encourages participation, fosters talent, and contributes to the region’s economy.

“A potential new facility represents more than just a venue—it’s a vision for a vibrant future for ice sports and recreation in Tasmania” she said.

The ROI process is an initial step to gauge market interest to inform the Tasmanian Government’s next steps to bring this vision to life.

For those eager to be part of this exciting chapter in Tasmanian sports and community development, submissions for Pre-Registration of Interest are now open.
