A New Lease on Life for Regional Heritage Buildings

01 THE CHALLENGE

Cushman & Wakefield was tasked to help ensure that the client’s premises continue to be both compliant and operational, whilst sympathetically refurbishing key features of heritage-listed buildings. 

02 THE SOLUTION

Utilising a depth of experience in heritage restorations, the Cushman & Wakefield team led by Rodney Semple and Bryan Purcell recently collaborated to manage substantial refurbishments of heritage-listed Post Offices in Charters Towers (QLD) and Northam (WA). Both buildings are listed on the Commonwealth and respective state heritage registers.

At the Charters Towers Post Office, the entire roof was replaced, and the building was repainted in colours sympathetic to the heritage of the property. Doors and windows were also replaced, as well as shared amenities, and entryways and stairs upgraded to meet current compliance standards. 

At the Northam Post Office, external balconies, balustrades and key structural elements were replaced. The residence within the building was fully refurbished for continued use by postal employees. 

03 THE RESULT

All works across both properties were completed in accordance with heritage requirements, within the agreed budget. Each Post Office remained completely operational during the refurbishment project and within shifting COVID-19 restrictions. 

Completed in November 2020, both properties proudly display their new lease on life, with these prominent buildings now set to continue providing essential services to their communities for many years to follow.
