Introduction
The pandemic has played a crucial role in increasing our awareness of the life sciences sector, forcing us to consider it both from a financial and social perspective in terms of funding and investment, and also from an educational point of view.
Spain offers an ideal ecosystem for the growth of R&D businesses, and for start-ups in particular. Moreover, the significant presence of multinational businesses throughout the country, along with the support of highly qualified researchers and public institutions such as universities and research centres, are key factors in the success of public-private sector collaboration within the sector.
Spain enjoys a geographically strategic position in Europe, with its ports, airports, railways and road networks enabling a high degree of accessibility through excellent communications.
Key public institutions in Madrid and Barcelona share the same vision as the private sector, working to ensure that Spain maintains its position on a global scale in terms of life sciences. This involves accurately understanding and addressing the needs of occupiers as well as developing demand for space, for which the requirements are increasingly complex.
For these reasons, we are seeing a growing number of players (in both the public and private sectors) in real estate that seek to invest in this asset class where it is linked with science and health.
The aim of this report is to provide an overview of the current position of the life sciences sector in Spain. This sector plays a key role in the country’s economy, covering numerous areas such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical research and healthcare technology.
